Athletes and volunteers help power five years of impact at the Bell AUS Basketball Championships.
(HALIFAX, N.S.) Atlantic University Sport is proud to celebrate five years of partnership with Special Olympics Nova Scotia at the 2026 Bell AUS Basketball Championships presented by Gatorade.
Special Olympics Nova Scotia has played a key role in the event by managing the 50/50 draw, becoming a valued and visible presence throughout the tournament.
This partnership has raised almost $40,000 to support Special Olympics Nova Scotia’s programs and services across the province, with this year marking the fifth consecutive championship featuring the 50/50 initiative.
The draw is largely staffed by Special Olympics athletes and dedicated volunteers, whose enthusiasm, professionalism, and commitment help create an inclusive and welcoming championship environment.
“Our partnership with Special Olympics Nova Scotia is one that truly reflects the values of Atlantic University Sport,” said John Keefe, Interim CEO of Atlantic University Sport and Chair of the Organizing Committee. “The athletes and volunteers bring incredible energy and pride to our AUS basketball championships while helping raise vital funds to support programming across the province. We are proud to stand alongside an organization that demonstrates every day the power of sport to build confidence, foster belonging, and strengthen our communities.”
Special Olympics Nova Scotia is dedicated to enriching the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities through sport. The organization provides year-round training and competition opportunities that foster physical development, confidence, social connection, and community belonging.
“We serve more than 2,500 athletes across 15 regions in Nova Scotia. These funds go directly to our grassroots programs ranging from youth development initiatives to training and provincial, national, and international competitions,” says Michael Greek, CEO of Special Olympics Nova Scotia. “This ongoing collaboration reflects a shared commitment to inclusion, community engagement, and the power of sport to bring people together.”
Atlantic University Sport is pleased to recognize this five-year milestone and the continued impact of the partnership with Special Olympics Nova Scotia at the AUS Basketball Championships.
